You can get back... but whatever you did back there, ten seconds or ten years ago, has seriously messed up the current time-line. In other words, Doctor Who caution seconded!
If I built a time machine, I'd make one that only goes forward, then see how many people would want to go. Probably quite many, even among the regret-ridden bunch...
I think it would be far safer (and less stressful, thankfully) to just be able to see the past. Be a ghost thing or something! You couldn't possibly alter anything, but you'd get all the nice knowledge of time travel.
Ay, seconded, again. Though the nice part is suspect - Stapledon wrote about something like that, and the result was that entire species went nuts. Historians would, at the very least.
Heh, they'd just have to be sent far enough into the future, otherwise one would run the risk of, well, running into them and getting lynched, because the future was "not how I thought it would be!"
