Just had my third work session at Kadoorie Farm, and spent Monday morning injecting turtles with Baypen (this antibacterial stuff).
The basic procedure was as follows:
1. Select a turtle and grab it by a hind leg
2. Keeping hold of said leg, flip the turtle onto its side
3. Pull on the leg until it is fully extended and the injection site is exposed
4. Clasp the turtle firmly between your shoes
5. Swab the injection site with alcohol
6. Stick the turtle and push the plunger
I managed not to get shat on this time, as I was careful never to hold a turtle over any part of my person, and also succeeded in not sticking myself, thereby avoiding the bleeding and embarassment of the week before.
Also caught the last part of the Yuen Long Croc's latest medical exam. She was lying duct-taped on the Rescue Center's examination table as we came in, and following the lead of another volunteer, who declared that he wanted to touch her so he could tell his buddies about it, we all gathered round giggling and stroking the crocodile's tail while Nora (or someone) hissed at us to be quiet because Nimal (the vet) was trying to listen to her insides.
