Apparently the death toll from
Hurricane Katrina was around 1100 people. A tragedy, to be sure.
The Pakistan earthquake that happened yesterday - yet another horrendous natural disaster, second only to the Indonesian Tsunami the past year. Yesterday morning the news said 18,000 deaths, and yesterday evening they were saying 30,000 deaths... so there's probably more coming. So at current count, around about 25 times as bad as Katrina.
Of course, with the world being as equitable and people being as nice as I would hope, this obviously means there'll be around 25 times as much international aide for the victims of this disaster, and non-Pakistani's will be writing about it in the papers and on their blogs up to 25 times as much as non-Americans did with Katrina. And the media coverage will be at least as much as the Hurricane, especially condsidering that the majority of victims led poor lives and didn't have the luxuries of many of the Katrina victims.
U2 will lead a star studded worldwide telecast of a Pakistan earthquake benefit, and Michael Jackson will write a song about it, with all proceeds going to charity.
The world's people are equitable and nice, right - or am I being too naive and not counting on the hypocrisy of the masses?
Well, Australia has pledged a measly $500,000 in aide. But this is still 5 times as much as the US, which has 15 times our population, at $100,000. About as much as a new luxury car. ** Edit**
Just found out from
hummingalong's entry that Pakistan (a poor 3rd world country) sent the US a million dollars after Katrina, and the US (a rich 1st world country) retaliated to Pakistan's tragedy with a hundred grand.
Very sad indeed.
