So yesterday I gave my first test as a high school English teacher. To be honest, I wasn't really surprised by most of the grades -- some did very well, some didn't. There were a couple that took me off-guard -- students I expected to do well that only did okay, and one student who never looks like he's paying attention wound up walking away with the highest grade.
I gave a five-point bonus at the end of the test, asking students to identify another story that fit the same archetype as the story we'd studied. (Basically this was an attempt to see how many of them paid attention when I told 'em what an archetype was.) Almost everyone that bothered to put anything at all got a good answer, but there was one answer that broke my heart, because I just couldn't give credit for it. "That movie with Ice T and the guy from Men in Black."
Yeah, I know. And if the kid had just written the name of the movie, he could have gotten an "A."
I think I'm getting the hang of this.
