Thanks SO much to my buddy Chase for telling me about this. For those of you who, like myself, are into movie scores, the website Superhero Hype has provided links (legal links, I should add -- this is with the permission of the record company) to allow you to listen to the entire score of Superman Returns. While I do avoid spoilers about movies like the plague, I've got no problem listening to the score ahead of time, and this is a no brainer here.
I was a bit nervous about listening to this at first. After all, the original John Williams score from the first Superman movie is, in my totally unbiased opinion (yeah, right) the greatest movie score of all time. The music from that film is, at turns, triumphant, invigorating, energetic, masterful and even occasionally heartbreaking. That music tells the story all by itself. For example, listening to the track titled The Planet Krypton, you can close your eyes and picture a beautiful, ancient civilization, and you can hear it die. When you listen to the main march, you see Clark Kent ripping open his shirt and taking off into the sky. It's a beautiful work of music, and I never get tired of listening to it.
So could John Ottman, the composer for Superman Returns, possibly live up to that?
And how, friends.
Ottman uses the original Williams score as his framework, but his new compositions and extrapolations of that original score are incredible. Listening to it right now, I hear a piece with some high wind instruments pounding out a frantic tattoo, punctuated by low brass and drums. I have no idea what's happening at that point in the movie, but I know it's dire. I know Superman is in trouble here, and I'm waiting at the edge of my seat for the next track to hear him escape.
Listening to this music, more than anything else to date, has me excited about this movie. And although I can't off-hand think of any other movies John Ottman has scored, he'll definitely be on my radar from now on.
