Look! Up in the Sky!

May 21, 2006 14:29

Yeah, I’m getting excited. I don’t mind admitting it. With just over a month to go the prospect of the first new Superman movie in 19 years (and the first good Superman movie in 26 years) has got me all fired up. Bryan Singer proved to me that he can turn out a great superhero movie with the first two X-Men films, and everything I’ve seen of Superman Returns so far has me quite confidant that he’ll accomplish the same magic with the Man of Steel. But I’m not just excited for the movie. The comic books -- Superman and Action Comics -- are the best they’ve been in years, the Smallville television series is firing on all cylinders, and in a few weeks Warner Brothers is releasing Look! Up in the Sky! on DVD - an original documentary detailing Superman’s impact on television and in the movies. I’m quite looking forward to that as well. And for those of you in Southern Louisiana, look for June’s Selabration magazine, published by my old buddy Eric LeBlanc, which will feature a piece by yours truly outlining the cinematic history of Big Blue. I can’t help it, I’m totally jazzed. There has never been a better time to be a fan of the Big Red S.

On an entirely unrelated note, I’m still hard at work on that little mystery tale I mentioned a while back, and I just might have something else to announce soon. I don’t want to get specific because I don’t want to jinx it, but those of you who are interested should definitely keep an eye on the Evertime Realms LiveJournal over the next week or so. Keep your fingers crossed for me, will you guys?

Weird Things I’ve Overheard While Teaching
Kids are funny, you’ve gotta admit that. And since I’ve been working as a substitute teacher, I’ve heard a lot of funny things come out of their mouths. Here are a couple:

•What does “smite” mean? I don’t think God would do that.
•(Said to me) You’re all up in the Kool-Aid, but you know the flavor.
•“Ya’mom-um” is a word! Let me look it up!

Blake’s Universal Rules of the Universe!
Rule #171: Anything that’s classic became a classic for a reason. By the same token, there’s nothing virtuous about change just for the sake of change. In other words: if you’re going to screw with something that people love, you better have a damn good reason.
