Lots of things on my mind right now, so you're going to get a rapid-fire mishmash of what I'm thinking about:
So, do you know what's a better feeling than going to your local library and seeing a book you wrote sitting on the shelf? Going back a few weeks later and not seeing it there.
Tomorrow I start the workshop to become a substitute teacher in St. Charles Parish. I'm doing this, as opposed to something else, to see if teaching is something I could really do long-term. I'm not as nervous as one would expect. I wish I knew why they scheduled the workshop for a Monday and Friday, though -- that's kinda odd.
Did you see last night's episode of South Park? BRILLIANT! Trey Parker and Matt Stone took direct aim at Isaac Hayes, who quit the show recently (as I mentioned in last week's
Think About It Column: Farewell to Chef. Hayes ostensibly quit because of the show's "religious intolerance," but Parker and Stone quite publically said they believed the real reason he quit is because the show recently made fun of Scientology, and Hayes is a Scientologist. Last night's episode brought Chef back via old sound clips of Hayes in a story that absolutely skewered the situation, with Chef getting brainwashed by the "Super Adventurer's Club." And while the -- ahem -- "practices" of the club weren't necessarily something Scientologists go in for, when they talked about the origins and beliefs of the club, they really nailed it. Oddly enough, the closing speech was actually a little touching -- Kyle talked about not being mad at Chef for leaving, but being mad at the "fruity little club" for brainwashing him. You've gotta figure that's how Parker and Stone probably really feel. One of the best episodes I've ever seen.
If you're reading comics and you're not checking out DC's One Year Later titles, you're cheating yourself. Most of them have been good, but Superman #650, Detective Comics #817, Catwoman #53, Robin #148, Aquaman: Sword of Atlantis #40... these are some of the best comics to his the racks in YEARS! Read them! NOW!
Honestly, the only Marvel books that are out right now that even come CLOSE to DC in how much I enjoy them are She-Hulk and The Thing, both of which are written by Dan Slott. Marvel needs to take advantage of this guy more, he's fantastic.
Rehearsals for It Runs in the Family continue apace -- I'm really enjoying working with this cast. Next week they go off-book. This ought to be REALLY interesting.
iPods are the greatest idea ever. I got one for Christmas and I use it nearly every day -- driving to rehearsal, listening to music while I read in bed... I've even started taking walks every couple of days, loading the iPod up to have something to keep my mind occupied as I go.
