First day of work!

Nov 10, 2008 19:26

Well, I'm not drinking from the fire hose. I'm not drinking from the garden hose. I'm not even drinking from the frelling water fountain. I'm drinking from the frelling Chinese water torture!

Got to my new office building at 8:45 for a 9:00 appointment to be sworn in (yes, I had to take an oath) and have my ID created. The oath is that I will not reveal Title 13 personally identifying information I may encounter in the fulfillment of my duties at the Bureau of the Census (now or after I leave).

After dealing with that (well, with the temporary ID -- the system for enrolling for a permanent ID was offline and will be until Wednesday), I reported for work. There is not a computer waiting for me. There is not an office phone waiting for me. After two hours sitting doing nothing (well, doing puzzles in a puzzle magazine) they provided some orientation material. After reading those, a coworker offered to let me watch over her shoulder as she worked. After she left (she works an early shift and leaves at 3:30) it was back to the puzzle magazine until 5:30 (well, 5:45, since there wasn't a clock where I could see it from my cube) when I left for the day.

Tomorrow is casual dress, since the Federal employees will not be there. I expect to be bored out of my mind again. I won't know for sure whether I can have the day after Thanksgiving off until Thursday, because my manager is out of the office.

Ah, the guvmint. Hurry up and wait.
