Snow, Revisions, Omni Thoughts

We had a touch of snow here overnight Thursday into Friday.  This does not please me.  Yes, I understand many places are already colder and snowier. Born and raised in coastal California, I'd never lived in a place with seasons until I moved to Indiana after my son was born.  There was a time I thought I was getting used to winter.  That time has ( Read more... )

This is a very interesting perspective--have to ponder that! It certainly does seem that the pendulum is swinging back toward omni POV and longer, involved stories. (Or maybe that never left, in spite of the swing toward detached third, short, etc.)

Yeah, I don't know if it ever completely left. It's difficult, sometimes, to separate what readers want from what they have been nudged toward expecting.

I do remember hearing the prediction written work would get shorter and shorter because modern life encouraged minute attention spans. That certainly hasn't come to pass.

Faster pacing, yes. But it seems to me that fast-paced doorstops sell better than elegiac (or plotless), elegantly short works.

Blair, I love your exploration of Twitter from the perspective of narrative viewpoint. Awesome.

This? "Who knows, maybe there will come a day when lit crit names limited third as the demonstration of societal isolation and self-centeredness. :-)" Rocked my world.

Thanks!

It's odd to think about, isn't it? All those potential connections and influences.

Interesting to explore the idea of location of point of view relative to the generations of readers. The 80s were considered a selfish decade -- how close in did the narratives get during that time than in other decades or for other generations?

I'm here via sartorias and agree that omni never went away. POV's seem to go through long-term fads based on the changes in society. I think you nailed a great, unnoticed cultural influence on how we write nowadays.

Thanks!

Those thoughts led to other thoughts...but I'm still unpacking them.
