To be fair, those companies were tanking mostly based on the iPhone's ability to do something similar -- Droid is still a fairly small share of an Apple-dominated market.

Speaking as someone who uses a different subset of the Google Maps features -- I never use turn-by-turn directions or indeed direction at all, but I use the ability to search the map for businesses or various types constantly, I'm really pleased with the Droid. The integration from Google Search to Maps to phone is slick, and I've gotten regular use out of it. I'm also, generally, happier with the Maps interface then with any of the other GPS units I've played with, although I don't think I've used a recent TomTom.
