Metamorphosis

I got up off the dirty brown carpet where I was lying. It was mid-afternoon
at the house in Alpine Village. Where my neck had been now writhed a large
black caterpillar-like creature. It was beautiful and disgusting at the
same time, with a blood-red stripe running laterally on both sides and
slowly thickening in width, though I didn't notice that right off.

I looked to the sliding glass doors and thought about disposing of the
wretched thing by dropping it off the balcony. Then I looked back down at
it.

Still in turmoil, though now more violent, the thing had grown two or three
times its size. The shedding skin that peeled as it morphed clung to its
body, transparent orange and shell-like. I certainly didn't want to touch
it then, it was too much in its frenzy to warrant anyone's approach.

Time passes. I'm outside on the stone steps, and with us (Layla and I) the
caterpillar creature is still undergoing metamorphosis. It's something like
a man now - looks like Griffin from Berserk. But somehow it's Sean
Johnson. Somehow he's changing into a vampire that looks like Griffin, via
the metamorphosis of a butterfly.

And I remember thinking that no beauty could come from that ugly, writhing
black thing, even though its peeled shell took on hot translucent colors -
colors that should imply danger, toxicity. Somehow they didn't. Somehow
they reminded me of rainbow sorbet.

I see next, like an impressionist's painting, the vibrant and lovely colors
of Sean's wings. And someone else's. I remember reds and variants
thereof. Purples. Blues. Seductive and dangerous, like vampires should
be. But the other wings.

Some woman. Some female vampire come to assist her fledgling in his new
life. Soon he would leave me, saying he still loved me. Gone away, gone
off to a better life, leaving me to hope he'd come back and save me from
mine.

No.

I see him being taken underground, out of the daylight. A large, deep
cylindrical cave with stained glass filtering the light out. And he's gone
away.

I wanted to resume the dream, but Sean came in at 10 AM to get me to go to
work.
