Vault 202: Access Denied

Jul 12, 2005 18:05

She knew something was different this time; the guard glanced down at his uniform and pretended to brush something off as Ava approached. "Hi," she said quietly. She was not acknowledged. She looked over at the other guard on duty - he was the same: short, fat, and sedentary in the booth. Ava directed her question to this individual, who only seemed to acknowledge her as an act of defiance. "Can I get someone to open vault two-oh-two?" she asked. Without missing a beat, the stuck guard haughtily asked in his tiny voice, "Who's your unit commander?" Ava hesitated for a moment. She'd never been asked this before in any of her previous requests to access Vault 202. "Commander JB Gad," she answered with a timid inquisitive tone. Why in Terra were they asking her this? "Commander Gad is here today," snapped the guard. "You can go ask her for the key." Masking her surprise and disappointment, Ava thanked the nasty guards and started down Corridor 1B, towards the Command Chambers.

She turned abruptly, however, down the first hall on her left. She'd find some other empty vault.

Sure, Ava would have liked to get into Vault 202 early to begin work on the new project, but if it meant having to seek out her notoriously ill-tempered unit commander... well, let's just say it wasn't that important.
