Asia's Reluctant Superstar

It's been a while since this aired on CNN International, but I was thinking about all the things I dislike about the Western media's treatment of Chinese news, and this takes the cake.  When I heard that they sent a crew to Mr. J's French-Italian Restaurant in Taipei to interview Jay Chou, I was very excited.  I set the DVR up to record.  But I ended up catching it all on YouTube.  Here are the problems I have with this interview:

1.  It didn't air in the US!  They only showed politics every time this was set to air!  It was stupid coverage on how one of the presidential candidates for the 2008 election called another some dumb name.  So childish!  How is that more newsworthy than my Jay?!

2.  They mispronounced Jay's name.  If it were "Chow," it would be spelled like "Chow."  However, it is "Chou."  Of course, who bothers with Chinese names in American news?  I think the only Chinese athlete whose name was pronounced correctly for the Beijing Olympics was Yao Ming.

3.  I don't like this new girl.  I saw an older interview of LeeHom on this series, and the old girl was better.  This girl wasn't very sensitive to Chinese culture.  She actually laughed at Jay when he said he lived with his mother.  She also asked questions to both Jay and LeeHom (in LeeHom's second "TalkAsia" interview) that I think she shouldn't have.  These guys obviously didn't want to say mean things about other people, yet she brought up the Edison Chen scandal with Jay and Jay's rivalry with LeeHom in LeeHom's interview (when she mispronounced his name yet again).  She also brought up the gay issue with LeeHom, which has been covered so much in Asian news it's ridiculous, and LeeHom obviously isn't comfortable talking about it.  She also talked over Jay when he was trying to be polite by saying "thank you" in English to her.  It obviously took him a bit to get out the words, but she was talking already without noticing he wanted to say something polite to her.

4.  They dubbed Jay's voice, and quite badly!  Why couldn't they sub?  His voice is so cute!!!!  Plus, I wanted to hear the Mandarin anyways. :P

I think that it was kind of pointless of CNN to have this interview, if they wouldn't show it in the US and couldn't even get the man's name right.  He does need more exposure over here, not necessarily in the places where CNN International airs, which probably includes places where he's already famous.  Besides, who cares about the nobody whose interview didn't get aired in the country the filmrew came from?  Yes, the fangirls will watch it, even on YouTube, and say how cute he was in the interview, but the people who haven't heard of him?  The little old ladies who watch this kind of show?  They miss out.
