Something I recently noticed about a popular song...

If you've ever heard Jay Chou's "梯田" ("Rice Fields") or A-Yue's "小星星" ("Little Star"), then you've heard Amis chanting.  (The first is, of course, a Han performing a chant based on Amis chanting and the latter is an Amis chanting in his tribal language, but both are, nonetheless, Amis chants from Taiwan.)

I had never heard about this being used in Western music until just now.  I happened to do a Google search today, and I found this interesting page from a book.  I think I'd noticed something very familiar about Enigma's "Return to Innocence," but I hadn't realized that parts of the song were plagiarized.  It used recordings of two Amis (a man and a woman) chanting and no recognition was given to the singers or even the tribe the singing came from.  The tribe sued over this.  Here's the song:

For some reason, I hadn't heard of this until now.  I wonder how many people on this side of the planet know that much of this song came from two uncredited people from Taiwan.

pop, western music, amis
