Post-GMA Rant

If you need some laughter in your day, read the list of this year's winner's here.  The translations leave so much to be desired, LOL!  "Capricorn" is suddenly "Magic Jay Station."  Whoever translated this obviously used an Online translator and maybe an Online dictionary and has no clue what a pun in Chinese looks like.  "The Fragrance of Wheat" and "Poems of Post-Adolescence" also made me laugh.  Funny how this site has the same odd list.

Anyways, I just had to express my thoughts on the winners now that I know what the outcome is.  I'm going to skip some of the winners for either lack of caring or the need to listen to something.

Jay's "稻香" ("Frangrance of Rice") as best song?  From the whole year?!!  It was good, likely the best song from his album, but is it truly deserving of this honor?  Compared to Mayday's "你不是真正的快乐" ("You Aren't Truly Happy"), which was also nominated, I felt the latter was better.  If it weren't for the limited choices, if I could choose any song from the past year, I'd have too many better songs to choose from, but this decision is OK, I guess.

Eason Chan's "Don't Want to Let Go" was considered the best album.  Was it as good as 13 Band's "Horse-Faced Sailor's Summer"?  I doubt it, but rock bands besides Mayday (which is mainstream enough to get other nominations) only seem to get nominated or win in the "band" category.  Was this as good as Khalil's "Orange Moon"?  Or Mayday's "Poetry of the Day After"?  Any one of those 3 albums would have worked better for me as the best album.

Best music video was Jay's "魔术先生" ("Mr. Magician")?!!!!  What drugs were those judges on when they watched this to make them think this was the best MV?!!!!!!  I have, honestly, not seem many of the MVs nominated, but Khalil's "黑白" ("Black and White") MV was adorable!  The song was also really good.  Though it may sound a bit dull before it picks up, I've come to love this song (and every other song from Khalil's album) and find myself humming it at times.  Best of all, there's no yodeling.  In case anyone hasn't seen the MV, here it is:

And, since this is the winner, here's the MV for "Mr. Magician":

Crowd Lu won best composer.  I can surely live with that.  However, Ashin still didn't win best lyricist this year, even though he got nominated for two good songs.  What gives?!  "Poetry of the Day After" (the whole album) had amazing lyrics, but Ashin still hasn't gotten recognized for his poetry!  Ashin is obviously very into writing lyrics, and he's good.

The best band was an obvious pick, Mayday.  Why bother nominating any other rock artist for anything in the GMA anyways?  Of course their album was good, but no one else in that category had a chance at winning anything else, while Ashin was nominated as best lyricist and "You Aren't Truly Happy" was nominated for best song.  Of course, it's good to see that Mayday actually won something.

The best group was Nanwan Sisters.  I did give their album a listen, since they got nominated for multiple categories here, but I wasn't impressed.  They're aboriginal singers, but their singing didn't win me over at all.  When it comes to singing, I think Y2J should have won this category, though I haven't listened to Nylas yet.

Best newcomer was Crowd, wow!  I totally thought one of the "One Million Star" nominees would get this one!  It makes you wonder how much the voting actually factored into this decision, since Jam Hsiao had a crazy lead in that.  It's really cool that Crowd managed to get two awards out of this.  He still didn't beat out Jay, though, for number of awards, because Jay got three.

Jay was the best male singer.  Wait, are we thinking about the same album?  "Jay," yes.  "Fantasy," yes.  "Eight Dimesions," yes.  "Ye Hui Mei," yes.  "Qi Li Xiang," sure.  But "Capricorn"?  If it were Jay's debut album, or if you could imagine it as some other random person's album, would you call him the best male singer because of this?  If there weren't any other Jay albums, if there weren't a "Fantasy" or a "Ye Hui Mei," do you think he would still be the best male singer?  If you think so, you're only fooling yourself.  It's not that I'm not a fan or anything.  I've bought every album.  I've bought a few EPs.  I've bought a live CD/DVD set.  I have the Rubix cube with his face on it.  I have a set of Jay Chou playing cards.  I have tons of sketches of him that I've drawn.  I've watched most of his movies and have bought them.  Even the most hard-core fans need to recognize at this point that Jay's lost his direction recently.  He wants to make movies, and when he makes movies, you can tell he doesn't spend as much time on his music.  No one could make movies and put out an excellent album every year.  Jay can't.  He's only human.  Will rewarding him as the best male singer after he released his worst album make anything better?  Does it have any benefits?  I think not.  It also didn't make Jay show up this year, since he didn't know whether he'd win anything.

So, who got cheated this year?  Ashin, Khalil Fong, LeeHom Wang, 13 Band, Hsiao Hung Jen, Jam Hsiao, and others.  A lot of people didn't show up.  I still look forward to looking at the costumes...erm...outfits the artists who did show up wore.

Is Crowd going to eat those for breakfast?

Imagine this with white shorts and you have that outfit he was most worried about.

jay chou, gilded mediocrity awards, rant, crowd lu, mayday
