I really should feel a lot more frustrated right now. Once again, Battlestar Galactica derails everything that went on in the season, all for the cause of a final plot twist. And, once again, that final twist is left unresolved to keep viewers on for another season. But really, all it feels like to me is alienating.
At the end of the first season, they were already starting to lose me with all the religious whatnot. I was somewhat skeptical, and a bit disappointed that my gritty sci-fi series was treading on the territory of pre-destined fates and fortunes. Granted, I did think it was neat that the Cylons were the Christians. And I did still love the series enough to hunt down the second season in my tier-one-cable-ness.
But I was frustrated again, when the first season ended with Adama bleeding and dying on the command table. Seriously: shot to the gut, collapse on the table, screaming son, pool of blood, cut to black. That's all the closure they could give us? It's one thing to leave a few tantalizing threads of plot left to clean up in the next season. It's another thing entirely to leave one set of characters lost on a hostile planet just after a shocking!confrontation; a second set similarly lost and, additionally, religiously delusional; and a third in the middle of an assassination attempt. It's made even more pointless since everything went, more or less, back to normal at the beginning of the second season, especially when Starbuck came back from Caprica and Commander Adama came back from the dead.
In the second season finale, Baltar is elected president, despite some last minute attempts by Roslyn. Baltar commands colonization, and they end up settling on a planet, dubbed New Caprica. IMO, this would have been the best place to leave it. Whatever the reason, though, the writers decide to take a quick jump one year into the future. And, of course, Baltar's not done very well for himself. Seeds of unrest are growing, the fleet is in disrepair, and OMG! the Cylons came back and took over! The fleet tucks tail, toasters patrol the streets, Kara makes rebellious comments, cut to black.
I suppose the second season finale isn't quite as bad as the first. And really, for a show like Galactica, there really aren't that many good places to cut things off. And don't get me wrong, I still love the show for its beginnings and middles. But its endings annoy me to no end, and I hope that the third season at least attempts to leave us with a good taste in our mouths. Above all, a season finale should at least manage to tie things up better than the following season premiere.
