So, recently downloaded the Seti@home screensaver to lend my humble computer's processor to the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence. This has set my brain thinking a little on some of the assumptions which are no doubt justified to them, but seem a bit silly from my untrained, uninformed viewpoint. Like, the environment on Earth is the only possible way that life could form. Water and carbon based lifeforms are the only kind that exist. etc., etc. For all we know, the aliens are making similar assumptions about life based on their horribly different environment, and are therefore eliminating Earth as a possible location of life.
This gets me kind of irritated with the various different species that exist in sci-fi shows too, since they like to assume that all aliens will breath air, have two arms, two legs, a head, etc., exactly in the same proportions and positions as humans (although I suppose that cuts down on the special effects budget, and there are exceptions).
Ah well. This little rant doesn't really have an end, so I'm stopping there.
