Law and Order: Benson and Stabler are completely batshit.

I've almost stopped watching SVU. Occasionally I turn in, particularly if it's a Casey Novak-era episode (Mmmm.... Casey Novak... she can check out my briefs anytime). Now, it's really, really morbid curiousity, because Benson and Stabler are utterly fucking nuts now ( Read more... )

And this is exactly why I can't even watch reruns anymore. Even when they lampshade when Elliot and Oliva have gone too far, nothing... Ever. Comes. Of. It. Either it's ignored or Cragen will step in and run interference.

At least Jack McCoy had his bullshit thrown back in his face every once in a while.

Ah, but re-runs have the benefit of Casey Novak's sweater kittens.

...yes, it's flimsy. I don't care.

Truth. McCoy would get hauled up by the short 'n' curlies when he did go too far and it would get brought up by others in the office, or be plot points for later epsides, so there were lasting repercussions to his actions. In SVU, Stabler and Benson can do whatever the hell they want with absolutely no repercussions. Well, Novak would occasionally get pissed at them, but then they'd yell at her about victims. Ha, take that judicial processes!

These days, if I watch it's only for Munch and Fin. Do they even show up anymore?

I thik Finn had a line, and the camera panned over Munch once....

You know, I like them too. Finn's history in Narcotics is good character fodder when it happens - and Munch is a character from another show entirely (Munch - as in the character, not just the actor - was even in Arrested Development), so there's plenty of material to mine for them.

Instead we get Elliot "I have anger issues" Stabler, whose entire character revolves around not being there for his family and being angry and Olivia "My mother was raped" Benson and being angry, who both take their frustrations out on anyone who's even accused of wrongdoing.

Argh. Munch and Fin are so much more entertaining, and they play off each other, too.

Didn't Munch also appear in the X-Files? I remember hearing about that.

Maybe one day Stabler or Benson will get shot. That would be delicious.

Stabler's been stabbed. Beaten. Choked. Garroted.

Benson's been almost-raped (for extra angst!)

Munch was shot. In the ass.

There are shows that can get away with this sort of railroading and ramroding, but they have abandoned all pretense of being remotely realistic. You can't be gritty and retarded in the same show; it just doesn't work.

Gritarded?

They try. They try so hard, but they come off as the worst kind of zealots. To be sure, they have good intentions, but then - so does everyone else. The road to Hell, and all that.
