#3 - Outside Perspective; A Knight's Tale, Wat/Chaucer - Artistic Sensibilities emerald_embers August 31 2010, 14:08:45 UTC
Wat/Chaucer omgomgomg FINALLY I HAVE AN EXCUSE TO WRITE THIS :D.

- - -

Kate never did like artists much when she was younger. They always seemed to think they were so much smarter than everyone else, thought their shite smelled sweeter, thought that a day spent under a tree watching the world pass by - without ale, at that - wasn't a complete waste of time.

The worst thing about Chaucer was the fact the smart part was actually true. He was an idiot for gambling and didn't so much have his head in the clouds as his head in the crowds, observing and daydreaming about the lives of the general public, but no doubt about it, he was smart.

Even smart people bruised though, and it was fun to see the sly smile wiped off his face every so often when Wat delivered a surprise punch to the gut.

It didn't ever wipe the sly smile away for long though, and Kate had been seriously thrown as to what all that might be about until she woke up in the middle of the night cramping, that damned body of hers opting to remind her she was a woman, and heard muffled whispers of "Shut up," "No, you shut up".

William's snores drowned out most of it, Roland sleeping peacefully through it all, and she rolled over with every intention of telling the boys to listen to each other and shut up before she took her hammer to them.

Her eyes widened and she rolled back to where she had been, playing asleep as best as she could. That hadn't been play-fighting.

Her cheeks flushed and she bit her tongue, tried to remember all the reasons why what she had just seen was wrong, and found only embarrassment and a surge of entirely inappropriate heat between her legs.

Well. Yes. That certainly explained all the teasing and wrestling, explained some of the more unusual looks Chaucer had thrown Wat's way, but - well.

Wat, as per usual, was oblivious to any strangeness on her part the next day, but Chaucer - still annoyingly sharp - picked up her looks in an instant.

"Ask away," he said, grinning wickedly. "I know you want to."

"Why him?" she asked. No jealousy in it - her heart was still in his grave, waiting for her to join him - just honest curiosity. Chaucer was smart and reasonably attractive for a skinny man, and she had a more than sneaking feeling there was noble blood somewhere in him, which begged the question of - why Wat?

He folded his arms, expression almost serious for once, looked over at Wat and Roland as they helped William prepare for the match. "I find myself laughing without making an effort around him. When you've seen as much as I have, it's a rare gift. Plus, of course, curiosity."

"What's so curious about him?" she asked.

"Have you ever wondered if the rug matched the drapes?"

It took a moment to process what that meant before she found herself laughing out loud, covering her mouth quickly and snorting, trying not to look in Wat's direction even though she knew full well she would have attracted attention from the other boys.

"Told you he makes me laugh," Chaucer whispered in her ear before stalking off.

She still didn't trust him far enough to throw him, knew better than to rely on an artist.

But she had to admit, she did like him.

Eeeee! This was perfect! I love that you did it from Kate's perspective, because Kate is awesome and probably the only one who would pick up on such shenanigans.

"Have you ever wondered if the rug matched the drapes?"
