I spent the weekend helping my mother cook for the Easter Sunday dinner to which she'd invited Strong Silent Guy's (her boyfriend's) family

Heh. Boy, are you in the wrong place. My second boyfriend - who's still a close friend over twenty years later - worked at the cinema where "Airplane!" was first run in our town. I still remember him showing up at my house one night saying, "There's a movie coming out that we HAVE to see! It's called 'Airplane!'"
We saw it three or four times together and I may have seen it a time or two without him; I saw it enough times to have most of the lines memorized. The last time I saw it theatrically, I was with a big group of friends. We recited all the lines as they came through the speakers, no doubt annoying the only other two people in the theater immensely.
Sorry, but I still find it hilarious. So does Bladekid. Hehe!
It's sort of like when people tell me that the Marx Brothers' routines are old and hackneyed. I have to explain that they only seem that way because the Marxes did them first and everyone else copied them.
What you have to understand about "Airplane!" is that no other movie had ever dared to be what this one was - a nonstop succession of sight gags, set-ups, and punchlines. Watching that movie for the first time, for me, was like realizing that there actually were other people in the world who thought like me and shared my kind of sense of humor. High school was a very good time to discover that, believe me.
And yeah, I can never allow it to pass without comment when someone starts a statement with, "Surely..."
Yeah, I get the context. It was actually the first movie of its kind that I saw, too. It's just that my father got to pick the movies, see, and I've sat through waaaaay too many rounds of Airplane!, the sequel, the knockoffs, the knockoffs of the knockoffs...
Hey. Is this meant to be flocked?
