So as a birthday pressie to myself I went to learn to Snowboard in day at the Tamworth snow dome. Firstly I'd like to say it was fun! Secondly I've never been so shattered and ache so much after anything!
The day started off when we were waiting for the instructors and others taking the course. I say we, I'm good with random people so just got chatting with them in starbucks (this was after i'd gotten my boots, bindings and board). We got the safety talk, a brief intro to the day and told to have fun. Then we hit the slopes. Was from scratch, so got told how to set up the board, how to stand and move etc.
Then the actual slope stuff started.
First up the toe brake. Basically facing up the slope and leaning forward to brake with the toes. It took a few trips to get it, the stance and how musc pressure to use. I fell over a lot, even when clinging to an instructor. But suddenly it just seemed to click and I could do it.
Then we moved onto the heel brake. Same as above, but facing down the slope. This I got working alot quicker, maybe it was easier and maybe something from the previous listen.
After that we did movement across the slope. Then bit was really easy, but only when I truly realised 'less is more' the whole point of boarding is to relax into everything and have the least amount of effort.
We then broke for lunch at 12, all part of the package. Curly fries, fish and beans!
After a 2 hour lunch we were told how to do turns. This is when I stalled. Took alot longer to get that. (we broke again for a break at about 4.) By this point I was already very tired, very sore and only just getting the turns. The idea is simple and my last run I managed one turn (from heel brake to toe brake) but then the turn back I'd mess up and fall.
I officially quit and had my debrief with the instructor and about 4.40. He said that I knew it all but just needed to practise it a bit. This means I didn't quite get to the 'Recreational standard' and would need a 2 hour top up lesson to finish me off.
I got home at about 6 (that was a horrible drive back) and am in pain. From the falls I have swollen and bruised left knee, bruised right knee, sore and bruised back side, bruised palms. From the drag lift and picking myself up from falls sore biceps. Sore lower legs from balancing. Headache and sore chest from the fatigue. But loved it and will be going back..... just once I can move without wincing!
