so, in my continued quest to fit back into my beloved black leather pants, i recently accepted that my penchant for starting the day with a dr.pepper needed some adjustment. rather than give it up entirely, i took the plunge and switched to diet (a task definitely not suited to the faint of heart). so i still got my caffeine ration but no more calories or sugar.
and then there was a mistake. during a shopping trip, my mother mistakenly purchased the caffeine FREE diet version. oh dear. but given that caffeine releases stored fats into the bloodstream where it circulates and occasionally sticks to blood vessels, i decided that it might not be such a terrible switch.
but herein lies my confusion... if one reads the nutritional information, it quickly becomes obvious that there doesn't appear to be anything in the beverage. no calories, fat, sugar, or carbs, and only a very little sodium.
the ingredient list? first is water. second is artificial coloring. so what is it that i'm actually drinking?? bubbly colored water?? it's nice to know that i've taken another step in refining my dietary regimen, but this question tends to haunt me late at night. forget deep philosophical issues, i spend my time trying to justify to myself drinking such a mysterious beverage. :sigh: i feel special. but maybe not in such a good way.
