My Dad

My Dad passed away last night surrounded by his children and his wife of 52 years.

To describe him is to describe my model for what a real man is; strong in body but most especially in will, a bright mind well fed with knowledge and experience then tempered with humor, an understanding that the family you choose is at the center of all of you will ever be.

His wit was entertaining, his good humor was infectious and his knack for making people feel special was a testament to his big heart.

After his stroke several years ago I asked him if he was going to be alright.  He directed me to reread "Ulysses" by Tennyson.  I read through the poem and he pointed out the last six lines.

Tho' much is taken, much abides; and though
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven; that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

So as my father taught me, I now teach my son and daughter.  Glory in my current strength and what wisdom I have to offer.  Learn what you can from my victories and missteps.  Then, when my time comes, remember to reread your Tennyson, until someone comes along who says it better.

I love you, Dad, and thank you.
