Last night I decided to watch Precious: Based on the novel "Push" by Sapphire. Yes, that is the COMPLETE title. Try getting that on a theater marquee! I rented the film on Blu-Ray to watch all the horrors as clear as possible. The story is about Precious, an overweight black girl who lives in Harlem circa 1987, but with music from the early '90s (it must be some sort of alternate reality). She was raped by her father and mothered 2 babies by him. Her own mother, played by Monique with brillance, is one jealous, dispicable, disgusting, fat, lazy, pig. She beats on Precious, forces her to do all the cooking, and makes her life a living hell. Her mother wants her to quit school and go on welfare for the extra money. Precious gets accepted to a special "alternative" school and decides to attend. What follows is Precious learning to deal with her situation and trying to make a life for herself.
What sounds like a good idea for a film, was actually a truly dismal, depressing and unneeded film. It was one horror after another. The shock value was on overload and I believed that they were throwing shit in to make it even more depressing just to make it "gritty and realistic". This film was not realistic. It was like a bad dream. I nearly turned the film off twice, because I couldn't handle it.
Monique's acting was superb. She deserved her Oscar. Whenever she came on the screen, I cringed and felt true horror. All of the future haunted houses or wax museums should have one to scare the bejezzuz out of everyone. I can't recommend this film based solely on that though. In fact, I never want to see this film again.
