It looks like a lot of new people are coming into the city right now. That seems quite odd to me... have those of you who have been here a while noticed anything similar happening in the past ( Read more... )

I never got around to explaining that, did I? Fonons are present in all things back on Auldrant. They bind atoms together and are also present in the atmosphere where they can be used for various purposes: performing artes (I assume these could be classified as "magic"), powering machines, keeping lamps lit, and so forth. Like the electricity you mentioned, fonons can be used as an energy source. Any device or scientific practice that makes use of fonons, could be roughly categorized as "fontechnology".

I'm not an expert on the subject, however.

I see... so the way you manipulate fonons sounds similar to how mages from my world are able to draw power from the surrounding elements.

What are 'artes?'

It's likely. The first six types of fonons reflect the elements: darkness, earth, wind, water, fire, and light. The seventh fonon is one that mutated in the planet storm. Some people call them "sound fonons", but they have also been associated with terms like "life" and "memory".

Artes are learned abilities. Fonic artes in particular are like spells. By drawing fonons into one's fon slots and then reciting a verse, one is able to perform more advanced artes that make use of different varieties of fonons. These are mostly used by soldiers and other fighters in battle, although there are also healing artes. Some monsters can perform them as well.

...You can use them to heal?

Yes...
Although healing abilities are limited to seventh fonists.

[There's a long pause as Neirenn thinks.]

Is being able to access the seventh fonon an inherited ability?

Yes, that's more or less how it is. Controlling the seventh fonon is not something that can be learned by just anyone.

I see.

And how does one learn to use fonons in the first place?

Normally one will receive training, although I suppose some individuals teach themselves. My own lessons came from a private instructor.

[ooc: sorry for lateness! Had to get a question answered :) ]

Do you think it'd be possible for you to teach someone else how to use them?

[[OOC: Yeah, I have some, too. XD]]

I can't be certain. It's possible that your biology varies too much from that of people on Auldrant - it could be difficult to explain how to use one's fon slots when you haven't ever felt fonons on a basic level before. I'm also not certain if fonons even exist in Paixao. However, if nothing else, I suppose I could attempt a demonstration.

That would make sense... still, I'd like to try. And even if I can't, I would like seeing a demonstration. Maybe we can learn something from each other.

Yes, perhaps we can each learn something.

All right. Do you know of any areas within the city that are open and relatively quiet?
