Shoshana told me with dramatic intonation that you downloaded some Mayer.

I like the occasional tune by him. I do think he's more indie-ish than most folks on the radio, what with actually writing his stuff and crafting his image. So I wasn't very surprised. Shoshana has a vision of you guys as these snobby hipsters who only listen to bands that absolutely no one on the planet has heard of, so much so that the band's manager doesn't know who they are.

But I know better. You guys, hip ? Yeah. I was there when you forced your helpless dog into a plastic Darth Vader costume last October.

And to answer your question about what song I'd walk on to were I on the Phillies, it'd be " Dream Weaver " by Gary Wright. That song slays me, has since junior high. In high school it came on my alarm clock radio one night whilst I was busy making out with Leona, my gf at the time. It's a special tune.

What it all comes down to is that you have good taste. Sopranos, the Eagles, these are quality interests and worthwhile pursuits. I look forward to watching the boys come back against San Fran next Sunday. And no, Shoshana didn't tell me who we're up against. Actually, she doesn't seem to give a crap about the Eagles, I've discovered. The Phillies, yes.

Believe me, I fight image problems all the time. There's this sort of stereotype of me out there that has taken on a life of its own that has nothing to do with my actual behavior on a daily basis. I talked about it in my lj, in the entry titled Myths My Friends Believe, and Shoshana and I have a chuckle over it now and then. Oh, right, you've seen that entry and dropped F-bombs all over it. Sweet !

We're not snobby really, I would say you're no different, you listen to a blend of radio and non-radio. If she ever perused our cds I bet she's heard of at least 60% of them. But close to 90% of them are rock. And some of them I have no idea who they are, they're Pete's. I don't want to come off as snobby, I am not snobby. I am more than willing to share this info with others, first of all. And sometimes I do like being hip and different. But snobby implies better, which I wouldn't say I think I am better than anyone, I just have different tastes. I don't like all indie music either, I just like to route for underdogs in any situation. I like new bands nobody's heard of, but I am not a slave to them like some other people I know. I just think rock music is something that the people have to grab by the horns, and there's some really good stuff out there the masses never hear because the executives at the top don't think it'll sell, which pisses me off. I just am not really a pop/dance music (i/e shakira) sort of person though overall. and you're right John Mayer is more indie-sounding, and he started that way just like a lot of the people I like. I liked death cab for cutie before they got big and now they are played on the radio regularly for example.

Image fighting is hard and can get annoying. But when it comes down to it, I am probably too sensitive and should give more a "fuck it" attitude about most things.

and you can diss on the hipsters like doug all you want, who completely abstain from listening to the radio in any way, but the truth is the radio is pretty terrible. we flip stations so much, escaping the tide of colorless rap and worse.

i don't think you're snobberish. i just think shosh thinks her music isn't " cool enough " for you guys, and she was surprised to hear you guys liking it.

one of the things i like about being my age is that i just don't give two shits anymore.

yesterday i saw some 14 year old boy wearing bell bottom jeans so huge they looked like individual denim skirts on his legs. and i thought to myself,
is that guy competing for someone's approval ?

besides remembering the 80's clearer than your friends do, not looking cool anymore is one of the sweetest perks of being over thirty.

I don't think it matters much anymore, if it ever did to me. Who are we trying to impress musically, clothes-wise, etc ? You should always be free to like what you want, and the world be damned.

Mike and I were just discussing the adorable Heather Langenkamp, the Just The Ten Of Us star who gave one of the finest cheese performances of the 1980s in A Nightmare On Elm Street. Mike may come to Elm Street tonight, and he suggested tailgating in front of the theatre with hot dogs and beer. We just had a 15 minute fire drill in which fire fighters with ladders inspected the inside of the building.

Annoying, but it gave us time to jibber-jabber about things. We wanna put together a Happy Hour for Friday.

Did the fire fighters find the hell mouth?

Have fun tonight, sounds cool. I'll be fixing someone's psyche at the time. Maybe.

I don't think I dress to impress at all, and I DEFINITLEY don't want to dress to fit in a subculture. I like to look nice and also be comfortable. I more worry about being teased for looking fat or things matching okay (like shoes) or wearing the same shirt too many times. Stuff like that should NOT matter, but I find myself worrying about it sometimes. Not around you guys, but around people I don't know as well who I don't want to judge me. I don't "fuck them if that's what they think" somedays. But other days, I am all about it. If someone's going to judge me based on my shirt though, they really aren't worth my time. I think I wouldn't worry about this so much if I weren't so shy. My personality doesn't tend to shine through for a few weeks/ months. Unless I am drunk. Too bad you can't start a first day at work intoxicated. That would be cool. Especially as a therapist. HHa.

When the firefighters took out the ladder,
I turned to Mike and said:

" Isn't the building only one story ? "

There are many scary jinx moments where Mike and I say exactly the same thing at the same time and then laugh. I fear for myself.

But I don't worry about people think about me based on the kind of music I like. I like what I like, I don't think you can force people into other genres, though I do like when people expand their horizons. Pete helped me do that. I used to be more into the radio and such back then, and now I like a little of both. But I definitley prefer artists who do their own thing or who aren't groomed for the industry based on looks etc... How do you explain Britney who is pretty talentless? Does she even know what she's going to sing abotu before she gets to the sound stage? But once in awhile I'll admit a catchy tune comes through regardless, but I can't really ever respect that music in the same way as artistic people who toil and move up the charts and really create their own stuff based on their life experiences or even just create cool sounds on their own. But this is more about the artists than the people or fans who listen to them, I don't really judge. Though if tons of teenagers are raving about it on TRL, I am probably not going to dig it. For some reason, that chaps my ass.

I know me, I didn't even know how to find out about more independent music a while back and I would have hated being judged for not being hip enough. Even now my some of my friends pressure me to discover new bands. I don't really do that too much anymore but if they offer me a cd of a cool new sound on their recommendation, I will give it a listen. And if I do discover a band that's cool, it's a good feel but I am not necessarily triumphing in coolness over others. It's just nice to share music really.

and when britney spears or whatever pop person comes out with a catchy song, it isn't even THEM making the song appealing. it's some talented mix artist, some producers with computers, some unknown song writer. singers like britney are just mascots...the actual team does the real work.

maybe what I need to do is share the music with her so she can hear what she's missing out on because the radio dicks over a lot of good music.
