Round Two

Auron/Lancaster - fever

Auron awoke for seemingly no reason at all, his breathing heavy and his heart hammering against his ribcage. Though the night was reasonably cool - it usually was in the foothills of Mount Gagazet - Auron could feel his body lathered with a sheen of sweat.

A nightmare, perhaps? Auron ran a slightly trembling hand down his face as his eyes slowly adjusted to the near darkness. The wind had died down to a low moan, as opposed to the mournful howl it had been upon their arrival, and the snowfall had eased somewhat. The air was filled with tiny flurries of white crystal, but he barely noticed them as they alighted upon his skin. The cool diamond dusting of snow soothed him, and gradually his nerves settled.

Braska slept peacefully propped against the eastern face of a large smooth stone, angled so that the sun would strike his face and wake him should he oversleep; Jecht lay sprawled against the western side of the same stone, his mouth agape and a low rumbling of snores emanating from his chest with every intake of breath. It was hours before the dawn, and more importantly, their campfire had nearly burned itself out. Auron stood quietly, dusting the snow off his trousers as he stacked a few more logs in the makeshift fire pit and stoked the fire back to a roaring blaze.

Take finished, he turned back toward the spot where he had laid his bedroll. It was to find out that Lancaster had laid her own bedroll just a few feet away from his, and that she was curled up so tightly within it that she looked even smaller and more childlike than usual. It took Auron a moment to realize that she was shuddering slightly from cold.

Unthinkingly, Auron unbuckled the front snaps of his red coat and eased the heavy garment off his shoulders, beating it several times with his hand to shake the snowflakes off. The chill air struck his sweat-dampened skin and lowered his temperature almost at once - comfortable again, Auron knelt down beside Lancaster and draped the coat over her before taking a seat on his bedroll and stirring the embers of the campfire with a long stick.

Minutes later - Auron wasn’t sure how much time passed, so lost was he in his musings - Lancaster sighed, drawing Auron’s attention away from the fire. The little girl’s face had unearthed itself from beneath her bedroll and turned unconsciously toward the fire; she continued to sleep peacefully, oblivious to Auron watching her. The light of the fire bathed her auburn-golden locks in a deeper crimson hue, making her hair shine with a stunning magenta hue; mystified by the child’s beauty Auron stretched out one hand, smoothing a few stray strands away from her closed eyes and tucking them behind her ear. His fingertips grazed the length of Lancaster’s cheekbone, and he marveled at the softness of her skin.

The warmth of the fire had raised a slight flush in Lancaster’s cheeks; watching the girl at rest, the delicate rose tone tingeing her skin, Auron felt a curious sensation - as though someone had lit a fire beneath his skin and it was smoldering away, casting a fever over every inch of his body. He allowed his fingers to linger where they were upon her ivory skin, listening rapturously to the sound of her light breathing, until his senses returned and he reluctantly drew his hand away.

For reasons Auron couldn’t explain, he stayed awake until dawn; he stared into the fire for many hours more, and the fever never subsided.

Seems fine to me. Sweet of Auron to use his jacket as an extra blanket for Lancaster. Cute little drabble, good job.
