Shadow/Dusk - limbo (500 words) nerdyprogrammer September 9 2011, 00:56:57 UTC
Dusk plops herself down onto the couch of the apartment she and Amy share. The pink hedgehog is off with her Sonic, the room is just warm enough to encourage laziness but not so warm as to be uncomfortable, and her MP3 player has a full charge.

“Hooray for having nothing to do!” she cheers, popping the earbuds in and turning the device on. She cranks the music up, leans back, and starts tapping her foot and bobbing her head in time with the first song.

Slowly she starts to lip-sync with the song as well, the whole four minutes until it stops. Then the device selects a somewhat calmer song, then another, and another...the peaceful music eventually lulling the purple hedgehog to sleep.

With a yawn she curls up, the buds tumbling from her ears. For the longest time she enjoys her nap in the comfortable warmth of the apartment...until she starts squirming in her sleep.

Within her dream, Dusk is in a familiar and unwelcome landscape...although that term might not be accurate seeing as there isn't any ground in sight. Whatever she's standing on is invisible, with an ebony sky stretching outward in all directions around her while dark purple and dark blue clouds float in its depths. This eerie limbo is unnerving enough on its own, but nearly all of her nightmares, all the ones that stick with her and haunt her thoughts at night, occcur in this very space.

“Oh crap,” she says aloud, nervously looking around for whatever sinister demon is waiting for her this time. Her fists are clenched, but shaking as her previous trips to the negative sky start to seep into her mind.

A faint wail behind her makes every last hair stand on end...and after summing up enough courage to force herself to look she can a small black lump a few feet away. Immediately she starts to back away, not wanting any part of whatever it is...but the lump never seems to get further away.

Slowly the lump trembles and ripples...then suddenly explodes; growing into a silhouette of her.

“Not again...I'm not dealing with you again!” Dusk screams, charging forward and slugging the shadow where its face would've been; sending it flying backwards.

Just as she's about to charge again, some sniffling from behind draws her attention...and she can see greyed out versions of all of her friends standing behind her. Before she could react, her dark mimic lashes an arm out, stabbing through the Sonic clone. He releases a terrifying scream before shattering.

The shadow continues to lash out, shattering clone after clone with a scream that sends shivers of pain through Dusk's body. Not wanting to take anymore, she runs up to the last one, Shadow's, and takes off...only for the dark lance to start pursuing them...until he too is destroyed.

Dusk snaps upright with a yell, back in her apartment, but Shadow's deathly yell still echoing in her ears. “I hate that thing...”
