“You almost finished?” called Rikku.
Lancaster was only half-listening, deriving too much enjoyment from the simple task of washing her hair in the cool, clear waters of the Moonflow. It was a lovely evening, and the sun was at the perfect angle in the sky to set the entire western horizon on fire - who knew when they would have another opportunity to simple relax? As per Tidus’s request to wait until nightfall to depart, so that they might all see the pyreflies dancing upon the surface of the enchanted waters, they were now taking a few hours to themselves. Lulu was guarding Yuna beneath one of the larger shade trees near the bank while the young summoner rested from their day’s journey, and Lancaster and Rikku were bathing in the Moonflow in a relatively concealed cove. Lancaster kept an ear perked up at all times, listening for the other half of the group; every so often she would hear a boisterous splash, followed by the sound of either Tidus or Wakka laughing, and so she assumed that the men were bathing also.
It was just as well… there were very few civilized places once they passed through Guadosalam.
“Almost,” Lancaster finally called back, lowering herself luxuriously down beneath the shimmering water’s surface and submerging herself completely.
The Moonflow was always peaceful and serene, no matter what time of year or day one chose to visit; it was nothing but pristine waters, soothing sounds, and beautiful skies. Not once could Lancaster recall ever seeing a single cloud marring the deep cerulean sky over the Moonflow; she suspected that, in the pages of Spira’s long-lost history, there rested a tale of the Moonflow and how it had come by its mystical qualities.
Lancaster’s head broke the surface and she inhaled, listening all around, her eyes still closed. Rikku was moving slowly in the cove behind her, perhaps tracing her palms over the surface of the water; there was splashing around the bend, where the men of their party were cleansing themselves, and if she listened with all her might Lancaster could even hear the light, deep breathing of Yuna as she slept.
“I’m all done!” announced Rikku proudly, and there followed the sound of heavy splashing as the young Al Bhed displaced half the cove in her great hurry to be out of the Moonflow. “Coming?”
Lancaster took her feet, tossing her dripping hair over one bare shoulder and making her way slowly toward the shore. She felt no need for modesty - the other girls weren’t seeing anything they weren’t already intimately familiar with, and the men were nowhere to be found - so she trod up the smooth sandy slope to the low-hanging branch where she had deposited her clothing. Rikku was toweling off and Lancaster did the same, absent-mindedly squeezing water out of her golden-auburn hair.
