A semi-obscure musical thought whilst listening to music from 1993

I know that everyone goes on about Emo* kids being the new Goth kids, but I wonder:

Was Shoegaze the original Emo?
If we had been above the radar, like the Goths and the Seattle-types, would we have been made fun of for our swirly, sad music and quiet voices and non-grungy clothes? I'm going to have to think about this a little. And then go shop for little flowery dresses. And find a skinny boy in a stripy tshirt with hair in his eyes and unsuccessfully flirt with him while he talks of despair. Preferably with a copy of Prufrock in his pocket next to the Parliaments.

Signed,
An aging Shoegazer with Madchester leanings and a stripe of trip-hop down th e middle.

*Yes, I know Emo as music style has its own original roots and all that, but I'm not talking about the specific style so much as the cultural phenomenon.

music, ooh swirly, teh nineties, pandora.com, eureka moments
