Chapter 5
~ The Pain ~
Himeko and Umika are on their way to the cafeteria when they saw the three guys, Umika called their attentions and as they came to approach them Himeko stopped as she heard her name being called at the back.
“Hime-chan, Umi-chan” the caller said, as she turn she saw her friend Yamada Ryosuke, and just like the three guys Yamada started spending more time with Himeko and Umika during his lunch time and after classes and Umika notice the awkwardness when Nakajima saw Yamada, how Nakajima send death glares whenever Yamada is around Himeko and talking to her.
And to Umika’s thought she confirmed that Nakajima Yuto is eyeing for Himeko her best friend and she is happy that there is someone that liked her friend but she can’t be fully happy because her so called best friend is suffering from heartbreak and the cause of it is just close to them and it worries her sometimes how her friend handles her emotions and act normally in front of them knowing she is not fine.
They are sitting right now at the cafeteria and she just watches how their group is divided into two Himeko and Yamada were on the other side of the U shape-like table, Umika and Arioka on the center and Chinen and Nakajima on the right side of the table, Himeko and Yamada were busy talking about the new pet dog of Yamada while Arioka and Chinen were talking about the soccer shoes they saw and as for Nakajima his ears were all at his friends but his eyes are stealing glances at Himeko and Yamada.
As they were eating their lunch Himeko took out one of her bento box and as she opens it, it was filled with strawberries, full of their own lunch Chinen, Nakajima and Arioka didn’t bother asked to have some and as for Umika, she knows how greedy can Himeko be when it comes to strawberries. She may not be a fast eater when it comes to favorites but she’s sure to eat all and save the rest only for herself.
Yamada who also happen to be a strawberry freak was delighted to see the bento box and hurriedly took one without asking but before he could put it in his mouth Himeko took the strawberry back and as always they started their battle for the strawberries, Himeko preventing Yamada to get near her strawberries by blocking him using her back on the other hand Yamada tries his best to take the bento box.
As they kept on fighting for the bento box of strawberries her other companion kept on laughing at their childish acts except for Nakajima, defeated Yamada decided to give up and teased that he’ll not talk to Himeko but the latter wasn’t listening to him and just kept on eating the remaining strawberries.
On their way back to their class the boys were walking ahead the girls just a bit, when Chinen suddenly stopped at the one of the classrooms and as Himeko saw Kudou went out and talk to Chinen, to ignore the scene Himeko just diverted her eyes at the other way and just pass by them but she was stopped when Chinen called her name.
“Tanezawa-san” she turns to them.
“Hai?” she said then faked a smile.
“Ano, I would just like to ask..” he paused as he was being pulled by Kudou and talk to him softly, Himeko can hear them talking but not so clear, the only words she heard was ‘you don’t have to’ then Chinen face her and said.“..if Shizu could come and join us for tomorrow’s lunch?”
“Eh?!” a bit shocked, this was the only word that came out of her lips. She don’t know how to react and what to say for she just couldn’t refuse because she knows that if she do Chinen and the others would wonder why and might stop eating with them but if she let her join them she just let herself hurt again.
“sure, no problem at all” she lied with the reason of helping her friend with Arioka since she didn’t have any chance so she thought she could at least help Umika with her love.
Umika who secretly eavesdropping to their conversation let out a sigh of frustration as she heard her friend agree to what Chinen asked, she knows what her friend feel but to torture herself she can understand the reason why Himeko agrees to it but what she know is that Himeko will just hurt herself by letting Kudou eat lunch with them.
And so the next day came and as what Chinen and Himeko agreed with she let Kudou have lunch with them but eating with them together Himeko excuse herself to get some strawberry milk thou it was a lie the real reason why she excuse herself was because she can’t stand how the two lovebirds act in front of them, she might just met Chinen Yuri but she liked him long enough to hurt this much and as the scene of Chinen and Kudou plays on her mind a tear fall from her eyes, Nakajima notice that Himeko’s taking so long and decide to go get her.
“Tanezawa-san?” Himeko heard someone called her so before she turns to the caller she secretly wipe the tears away.
“Nakajima-kun..” she fake a smile as she face Nakajima.
“..anou Tanezawa-san, what keeping you so long?” Nakajima asked the girl right in front of him.
“a-ah..gomen I was spacing out earlier, gomen ne..” she reasoned out, true she was spacing out because all she could think about was Chinen and Kudou and the feelings she have for the said guy and how will she forget about her unrequired love.
“don’t tell it’s your anemia again?” he said with a tint of worry heard from his words.
“iya..daijoubu, there’s just a lot of things occupying my mind that’s why..” she said with her eyes down and a faint smile, Nakajima notice the expression Himeko made so he just decided not to ask more questions since it can be shown from Himeko’s face that she doesn’t want to talk about it.
When they came back to their table where the others were, Yamada notice that Himeko’s quite all the time but he just let it slip because he thought it was just nothing. Chinen who saw the two just sit right in front of them notice how his friend kept on staring at Himeko, quite curious he also look at Himeko and notice that she doesn’t enjoy their lunch together.
“Tanezawa-san, daijoubu?” he asked but to his dismay Himeko just gave him a faint smile as her responses.
After their lunch the all went back to their classroom to attend their afternoon classes but before Himeko could enter their class Umika grab her arm and dragged her near the stair case.
“What were you thinking Himeko? Are you crazy?” she said with quite a loud voice the moment Umika stop.
“what are you talking about Umika?” Himeko said still confused why her friend dragged her and now asking these questions with a tone.
“why did you agree and let Kudou Shizuka eat lunch with us? Why do let yourself suffer?” she said holding both Himeko’s
should with her hands.
“I just can’t refuse him..” Himeko said as she diverted her eyes down.
“For Pete’s sake, Himeko don’t tell me you can’t. You’re just letting yourself suffer with this pain that you don’t deserve..” Umika gently let go of her shoulders and then walk to their classroom leaving Himeko standing still near the stair case.
“Pain..so this is what it is..it does hurts so bad” she said to herself as a tear escape from her eyes.
