Roy Mustang is a person who knows how to make sacrifices.

He understands, in perfect detail, that in order to attain his dream of becoming Fuhrer there are certain things he can and can’t do. There are things he has to give up, people to suspect and plot against, and rules he has to follow or break. To attain his dream, he has to sacrifice his chance at becoming Fuhrer in order to root out a great evil in the military, and to find those responsible for Maes’s death.

He knows what to do when Edward reveals Fuhrer Bradley to blame.

Now he asks Edward to come with him to fight against the military he had worked for all his life.

He does not, cannot, order Edward to come with him. Instead, he asks Edward as he would ask any grown man. The Fullmetal Alchemist is sixteen and a child no longer.

There is regret, Roy decides when his gaze lingers just a bit too long on the defined neck of the blond, realizing that there is now an Adam’s Apple forming where once was only smooth skin. Regret that Edward had to be exposed to the atrocities of the world.

There are always things more important than your own dreams.

There shouldn’t be! Roy wants to reply. He wants to shake the teenager, the young man, who looks so intent and serious. Where was that child he had loved? The one who snapped and snarled and stood defiantly against even the judgement of God? Roy’s fingers twitch at the thought of that brilliant and naïve child, wanting so much to touch those golden locks and for curses to spill from that mouth, filled with passion and intensity.

But he is calm because he needs to be. Because Edward is calm, and Roy must be as well in order to face what lies ahead. They are heading toward their deaths; with Roy soon to be facing a homunculus masquerading as leader of the nation, and Edward facing the people who held the secret to the Philosopher’s Stone.

Edward is not twelve anymore. Roy is not as trusting. They have both found their place in the world; separate from each other.

Is this what a parent feels when a child grows up? he wonders awkwardly, Or how lovers feel when they’re separated?

He wants to turn back time. He wants Edward back with him, innocent and naïve with bright eyes and that foolhardy grin. He wants Maes alive. He wants to be Fuhrer. He wants Hawkeye to know how much he respects and cares for her. He wants to survive the night. He wants Edward safe, and for Alphonse to have his body back. He wants to change things.

He wants too much.

But he cannot possibly have all of that, so he says to Edward, “Good luck.”

And Edward (the child, the lover, the genius, the man) says back to him, “Goodbye.”
