i'm lucky. i haven't been the victim of sexual abuse/violence. the fact that so many have enrages me. 1 in 5 women will experience sexual violence. 1 in 3 physical violence. walking down the street in mid-afternoon men in cars will yell out to me. every week i have at least five men yell something crude or, preferably, undecipherable out their car window at me. it's happening more and more in the daytime and it is just unacceptable. the fact that i can't turn to the law about this is irritating. the fact that if one of them got out of their car and assaulted me i still couldn't turn to the law and recieve justice is disgusting. i read to kill a mockingbird today. in it the sentence for rape was the death penalty or life in prison. i don't agree with the death penalty in any shape or form. only one first world or progressive nation uses it and that is mostly for the further suppression of the poor and defenceless. nonetheless this is a novel set in the 1930's. back then they took rape as a serious crime! i'll agree that this is related to the fact that women were seeen as lesser citizens to be protected as they couldn't protect themselves... but nonetheless at least this type of assault upon a woman was taken seriously and understood to be awful. they may have seen it as awful for different social or moral reasons but at least it was taken seriously.
i'm tired and angry.
