... and it's about to come true!
After looking high and low for months for affordable rental spaces suited for BENT and coming up empty, I decided to create one myself. Through a friend I found the space. I'm both extremely excited and terrified.
I've just registered a business name today. I've been going back and forth on the lease agreement over the past several days. I intend to sign the final agreement and take occupancy by October 1st. I am a business owner with "premises" once that happens. We're starting from zero with nothing but the space. Any improvements will be made using income from rentals, after expenses (like rent).
We'll open Renegade sometime around October 15th and be open for rentals from that point forward. Renegade is an open concept, 3,600 sq.ft. space at Queen & Dufferin (24/7 transit in two directions!). It will be open to a wide variety of people and groups for an infinite number of purposes. It's main restrictions are that it won't be Licensed and it will take a while before the space is accessible. From the beginning it will be bare bones kind of like Raw Space, but in different ways. Over time, we'll be improving the facilities and adding other features. We'll even help folks plan their events!
I've got a small group of folks committed to helping me get started and keep it running well. I've got an awesome network of folks from all sorts of community groups that can't afford their own full-time spaces, but could rent if it were reasonably affordable.
I've already got one reservation for the space (aside from BENT, which will make this space its new home). Let me know if you have an event in mind for after October 20th (excluding October 31st)!!
Until I open Renegade officially, I'll be waiting for the former tenant to empty their stuff out, finalizing administrative business details, preparing the space for our use, coming up with a logo and marketing materials for the space (print, web), taking questions and advanced bookings, and setting up for our opening night.
