A far out Rosh Hashanah

Last night my family got together for the Jewish New Year (Rosh = new, Hashanah = the year).

The evening was the picture of family. Pie arrived latest but earlier than expected because traffic must have been ok. I visited with my brother-in-law while my mother, sister and nephew went to buy toys to keep at my mother's house for when her grandson visits. They came back and played with the toys with the nephew until supper.

We had the most traditional of all meals. My mother's melt-in-your-mouth brisket and gravy, chicken soup and matzoh balls, kishka (bread stuffing in natural sausage casing (aka cow's intenstine)), potatoes, carrots and onions cooked with the briket, salad and challah (egg bread). Dessert was apples & honey and honey cake with tea.

After supper, as dishes were being cleaned away, my sister asked the family,

"Does anyone want to smoke a big fattie with me before dessert?"

Riiiight. We all declined. But the fact that she could ask that question and get only a raised eyebrow on the occasion of a family high holiday supper with the baby, I think speaks volumes about just how irregular my family is.

My sister, hubby and child left very shortly after dessert. Pie, my mother and I stayed and hung around a bit longer and Pie helped clean up. We looked at pictures from some my family photo albums. It's amazing how many of my mother's university friends were lesbians.

I love my family. They're just... odd. I come by it honestly :)
