Back at St. James Elementary when I was, oh, probably turning 8 or 9... That same day, my birthday, we had a gym assembly where a guy from one of the large cat reserves, or a local zoo or something, brought in some animals to talk to us about.
He brought out a baby leopard and I was absolutely smitten. I was completely enthralled by cats at that point in my life, and this little killer was just beautiful. I was sitting way at the back of the group--because the higher grades had to sit in back so that the smaller kids could always see. The guy looked up at me--directly at me--and said, "A little birdie told me it was your birthday today--would you like to come up and pet the cub?"
I nearly died.
I can't remember what the cat's name was now, but I had the little thing perched in my lap, rubbing against my hand, and I was in utter awe. It was an amazing moment.
I don't know why that came to mind, but I figured I ought to jot it down.
