Indian Givers

When people think of the Indians some of the perceptions that come to mind consist of corn, tepees, and dark hair. Although our lifestyle in modern day America is very different from the Indians, we actually share some of the same beliefs and morals. Indians believe in an emergence story comparable to that of the story most Modern-day Americans believe in. Another similarity between the Americans and Indians is that both cultures are cautious and appreciative of the environment.  So fellow Americans, we are not as different from Squanto as we thought we were.

There are a few ideas and perceptions of the earth’s existence and origins floating around called emergence stories. The word around is America is that a man named God created this crazy world in seven days. Everyone and everything in creation was made out of nothing and we are here for a reason. The Indians also believed strongly in that this was the correct theory of emergence. Like Americans, the Indians were very familiar with The Creation Story in the book of Genesis.

Chief Seattle made it very clear in his letter that he and his people are proud and protective when it comes to their land. They believed their territory was sacred and that it held memories and stories of his ancestors. The Indians probably wouldn’t be too fond of the way Modern-day Americans have cut down tree after tree to build buildings and cities or the way the wild horses are now tamed. Although we live in two completely different cultures and many dissimilar conditions, our views concerning the preservation and well-being of the earth are alike. We also share the admiration of the beauty of nature and earth itself.

In conclusion, despite the many differences between the Indians and Americans today, we still share some parallel points of view. Not only do we believe in the same emergence story, but we value our lives and land. All cultures with different beliefs, values, and morals can find some common ground. There are more things we have in common with the Indians than we think!
