RIT in the news.
Two dining service employees were shot after three masked men broke into a campus kitchen in an apparent robbery attempt early this morning as workers prepared to open the dining hall to students, police have said.
The two women, employees of the dining hall at the Crossroads building, were taken to Strong Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Monroe County Sheriff Patrick O’Flynn said they were shot despite their cooperation with the robbers.
A bullet apparently grazed the head of one victim; the other reportedly was shot in the hand. Both are listed in stable condition.
The attackers were described as three black men in ski masks. At least one was said to be carrying a gun.
The shooting occurred about 6 a.m. at the Crossroads building, a facility on the southwest side of campus housing a large dining hall and student copying center, police said.
The three men reportedly entered the building through a back entrance and held the two women at gunpoint, then ransacked the area and forced one of the women to open a safe. The robbers took an undisclosed amount of money. A third employee apparently was hiding when the two women were shot. O’Flynn said she called 911.
RIT is open today; classes are scheduled. Crossroads Café is closed until further notice.
