This was really confusing to me, haha. How would it have helped Castiel find Dean? It was on Sam's body topside so why would Dean have had it in Hell? I mean, I know you see it when he's spinning around in the Hell vortex (still funny) but that was probably in his head, like how ghosts look the way they died, clothes and all. In that case, it's not ACTUALLY the amulet and therefore would not have the same qualities, especially since Dean himself did not actually know the true "power" of it - he only treasures it because his brother gave it to him and it's kind of a symbol of their brotherhood, which is probably a reason why he STILL cherishes it even after all the crap they've been through.

But Alastair says that he did the same things he did to Dean to John trying to get him to crack; if John had cracked, would he not have broken the first seal and brought on all this stuff a season earlier? And then HE would have been the Micheal vessel as well, breaking the truthfulness in Gabriel's whole speech about brothers set against one another. If it had been John, it would have been father vs. son which does not fit into the story of Lucifer's fall.

I'm wondering if the amulet isn't just a red herring, actually. It has a lot of personal meaning but it doesn't actually do anything or have any power. What if it's just another feather in Dumbo's grasp, so to speak.
