"The last scene we get with him before the final resolution was him either taking part in, or at least giving consent to a slaughter of demon-possessed people for Screwing Up His Life."

I don't know that he gave in on that at all. Lucifer was clearly in charge by the time the next scene rolls around I don't think Sam would have killed them all, he showed a lot of restraint initially with ... what was it Brian? Pharmaceutical boy. Who was spending the whole time gloating about how much he'd fucked with his life and then telling him about how he'd taken great pleasure in killing Jessica. These other people just sat there and stared and I don't think Sam would have been ok just killing them all. Plus Lucifer had control in the scenes before that and just allowed Sam to talk to him at best. I personally think Lucifer just gave him a front seat to watch the slaughter while he did it in order to break him. And once all the killing was done he let him sit there and take in the carnage just for that added 'look what we did' gloating. Which explains why he looked so unsettled at the end.

That makes sense too. He definitely looked unsettled, I just took it as more of a what did I just do compared to what did my body just get used for? Either way the mirrors were waay cool.
