Bending over in half so that her fingers almost touched her toes she took a deep breath and dived into the water. From the center of the lake three blonde girls clapped as she disappeared under the surface. Cheerleaders, she thought, rolling her eyes as she moved her arms, pushing herself forward strongly. Resurfacing for a quick breath of air she felt the sun warm her face before she dived under once again. In the clear water she watched as fish swam past her and she swam deeper. Rolling over she looked at the sun coming in from the surface and felt more relaxed than she had for months. There were no constant papers, no tests every other week, no parents breathing down her neck, no swim competitions to stress over. Just the water, sun and her four best friends. Smiling to herself, she resurfaced for air again ready to enjoy her weekend.

From her chair on the dock, Matsu watched as her friend dived under the water repeatedly. Keeping time to herself, she watched carefully to make sure that she didn’t stay under too long. Rebecca had made a habit of it, insisting that she loved it too much and had nearly drowned on several occasions. Shaking her head at the memory, Matsu smiled. She had been best friends with Rebecca ever since her mother went to work for her parents as a maid. Rebecca and Matsu had always run off with each other to play games like dress-up. Rebecca had always insisted on Matsu being a princess, but somehow it didn’t feel right. She was much more content watching her friend giggle happily over the wild stories she created.Rebecca resurfaced with the biggest smile on her face than Matsu had seen in months.

“You’re pushing it don’t you think?” Matsu called.

“Nope!” Rebecca laughed and dove back under water.

Kicking her feet Rebecca swam downward until her fingers wove themselves into the cool sand at the bottom of the lake. Smiling Rebecca picked up small clumps of it to watch the small grains float away in the water. It’s so peaceful, she thought to herself. Looking back up at the water where she knew Matsu was waiting she frowned. Ever since they were small Matsu was always worrying over her. Rebecca couldn’t get so much as a papercut without Matsu there to kiss it and make it better. Once they got into highschool Rebecca began branching out, joining clubs and making new friends, but no matter where she went, who she dated, what club she joined, Matsu was always there. She met all of her boyfriends even before her parents, and if he didn’t meet her expectations Matsu would tell her parents to forbid the relationship. The only boy that Matsu didn’t meet first was the only boy that ever hit her. He was only the only person that ever truly felt the power of Matsu’s strong fist. Rebecca didn’t date much, or at all, after him.

Gripping her eye tightly, Rebecca swam quickly up to the surface and over to the dock where Matsu was waiting with a towel.

“Did water get into your goggles again?” she asked worriedly.

“Yeah,” Rebecca laughed as she dried her eye with the towel, “it happens a lot lately, huh?”

Matsu nodded and took the towel from Rebecca’s hand to pat dry the goggles as well, “Maybe it’s time for a new pair of goggles.”

“Or maybe it’s time for you to stop worrying about me and just relax.” Rebecca smiled and wrapped her arms around the other girl, hugging her tightly, “I promise I’ll be fine.”

Matsu sighed and nodded, returning Rebecca’s hug before letting go back into the water. Sitting down so her feet were the only part of her in the water she watched the girls play. From where she was sitting she could easily watch Rebecca as she played with the other three girls. Swimming around and splashing at each other one could swear that they looked like five-year-olds. Next to her a deep voice chuckled at the sight in front of them. Looking at him from the corner of her eye Matsu took in the stranger, there was a familiar sense around him that she couldn’t quite put her finger on. She tossed her long black hair over her shoulder to try and get a better look at him. Following his line of sight her eyes narrowed when she realized that he was watching Rebecca.

Almost immediately a million questions popped into her head. Who the hell is this guy? Why does he keep staring at Rebecca with that creepy smile on his face? Does he like her? If so, what are his grades? Does he have any after school activities? Does he have any past relationships, if he does why did they fail? Was he mean? Does he only date easy girls? Does he think that Rebecca is easy? That son of a---

All of a sudden he stood up and dove into the water with a panicked look on his face, breaking Matsu’s train of thoughts. Looking back into the water, Matsu jumped to her feet when she realized that she couldn’t see Rebecca. How long had she been underwater? Diving into the water after the strange boy Matsu swam over to where the other girls were just beginning to realize that their friend had been underwater for way too long.

“Matsu! Matsu! Matsu!” One girl, Amber, cried swimming over to her, “Rebecca isn’t coming back! She’s been underwater for so long! Matsu where is she?!”

“Shhh,” Matsu soothed, rubbing her head, “it’s okay, it’s okay just calm down. Where did that guy go?”

“Wha-What guy?” Amber sobbed, even more confused.

“Nevermind.” Matsu said, feeling her panic raising in a way that she couldn’t control. “Nevermind, just swim back to the shore and I’ll meet you there with Rebecca.”

Swimming out some more to where she had last seen the girl, Matsu took two deep, calming breaths before taking an even bigger deep breath and diving under the surface. The further down she went the darker and colder it got. How deep was this stupid lake? Kicking her legs she pushed herself down deeper until she saw two people not far away. There was blood by Rebecca.

Kicking her leg and desperately trying to get free Rebecca looked around for Matsu. Where was she? She was supposed to always be there to save her right? Using her arms to try and swim fast so she could get away she looked over to see something swimming towards her. It’s Matsu! She thought happily, ceasing her struggle to allow her friend to swim over and rescue her. As the person got closer she began to desperately point at her foot to show that that was the place where she was stuck. Finally, Matsu came into clear view. The only problem was this person in front of her wasn’t Matsu. It was some guy, and he looked just like Chris, Rebecca’s ex.

Screaming out in fear Rebecca began to kick and thrash in an attempt to keep him away from her. She only stopped when she felt something sharp cut into her foot. Looking down she felt her eyes widen at the sight of her own bleeding foot. Thrashing around more Rebecca felt her lungs tighten and she knew that she would drown soon if she didn’t resurface. Looking back at the boy in front of her she held up both of her hands and shook her head fervently back and forth.

No, please, she thought, not you. Leave me, Matsu will be here to save me soon.

He continued swimming until her hands were resting on his bare chest and he reached out and stroked her cheek softly, as if they had been in love their entire lives. Rebecca closed her eyes and rested into it, feeling safe.

Once Rebecca had relaxed he swam down so that he could see her foot and carefully, so as to not further injure it, untangled it from whatever that was it was stuck in. When he swam back so that he was eye level with her, he panicked to see that her eyes were no longer open and her beautiful lips had turned blue from lack of oxygen. Grabbing her tightly in his arms, he kicked up to the surface with all of his strength, refusing to see her drown.

Matsu stopped and began to swim up to the surface once she realized that Rebecca was free and being carried up to the surface. She gulped in big lungfuls of air and swam over to where the boy was holding her Rebecca.

“Give her to me.” She gasped holding her arms out.

“No.” he said, “I will save her, and you can barely breathe.”

Matsu opened her mouth to protest but before she could the stranger had already kicked his way back over to the dock. He laid Rebecca down on her back and listened for a heartbeat or any breathing.

Cursing when he found none, he placed two hands over her heart and started pumping it. The whole time whispering, “One, two, three,...” at thirty he tilted her head up, pinched her nose and blew big lungfuls of air into her. From a distance May held Matsu protectively in her arms. As she watched the boy pump life back into her friend, her family, she felt silent tears begin to fall from her eyes. Closing her eyes, Matsu prayed to a God that she didn’t believe in. She prayed that her sister might be saved. The sound of coughing and cries of joy broke her from her deep prayer. Crying happily, Matsu ran over to Rebecca and held her tightly in her arms. Returning the embrace Rebecca laughed at her friend.

“Christ,” she laughed, “You’d think I had died or something.”

A ninja flip-flop came out of nowhere and hit her on the side of her head. Looking over her shoulder she smiled at a very pouty Lizzie with her arms crossed, “That’s not funny Becca!”

Standing up so that the girls could all tackle Rebecca, Matsu walked over to the stranger.

“Thank you,” she said, “you’ve returned something very precious to me today. What can I do to thank you?”

The boy smiled and looked over at Rebecca, “Just, make sure that she keeps smiling.”

A corner of Matsu’s mouth turned up into a smile and nodded. Just as the guy was turning away from her she called out, “When she asks me what your name is, what do you want me to tell her?”

A laugh, “David!” and he was gone.
