The short version: had an intestinal flu last week, so I lost about three days of work, then had Easter creep up on me (I usually work on Sundays -- don't ask) so that didn't help, and... ARGH. The idea of a promised land appeals to all. Yes, I think there are lots of people who are willing to go to any lengths for fame. Is L.A. teeming with people who are desperate for stardom? I have to say I have never met anyone I would say is desperate for stardom. And I live with an actor who has tasted some of it. I've met the ambitious and the driven, but not the desperate. I'm not saying they aren't out there, but I'm thinking the desperate make better characters in movies, television and media coverage than the average people I've known, some with talent, some without, some driven, some lucky, some working, some grousing about not working. It's like the whole stereotype about the "struggling actor" bussing tables and just waiting for his first big break. It's part of Hollywood lore, so that's what immediately comes to mind. And, as I say, media is only interested in the darkest of the dark.
I think you can find plenty of stories to support that viewpoint, sure. People have been jumping off the Hollywood sign since it was first built, but there are crazy, desperate, sad people everywhere. Throw money and power into the mix and some people with that proclivity probably go off into La La land and hello, Phil Spector.
I also know plenty of sane, well adjusted people in the industry and in this town as well. Where ya gonna look for your stories, that's where you'll find the answer you want to believe.
