"Please introduce yourselves and cite what aspect of black history interests you most, (ie cowboys, sailors, migration, etc.)."

Hello, my name is Thomas. I'm a 21 year old white male, dual Canadian-United Statesian citizenship. I ought to be graduating with a BA in History from the University of British Columbia in May. I'm very passionate about the study of the human past and how it relates to the human present. Last year I took a 6 credit upper levels survey course of African American history, it was absolutely one of the best classes I've ever taken. Before that I had some basic grounding in African American history due to my habit of reading whatever's around the house, and my dad has a pretty good collection of books relating to African American history from various university presses. So, I've been going at it a long time and the more I read the more complicated everything gets (ain't that always the way?). I am still very much in the process of trying to further educate myself/be further educated by others (hopefully this won't ever stop).

It's hard to cite one particular aspect of black history that interests me most, it's all so interrelated, relevant to today, and fascinating... but at this particular moment I'll say either the relationship to history/memory demonstrated in the work of Romare Bearden, particular the 1960s and 1970s work, OR the Deacons for Defense and Justice (but also basically everything else I've heard of... unfortunately both those choices stay in a very focused period of time). Ask me again next month and you'll like hear something else. (yeah I guess I sorta weasled out of answering the damn question, lol)

I look forward to getting to know people here and participating in discussions,

Thomas
