Super Sunday

For starters the day began with a light aioli braised five hours of sleep followed by a pan-fried pep rally prepared with a white wine and butter reduction followed by a second entree of a hanging out with a Mariokart and Conchords remoulade followed by a brisk desertif of UCB stand-up reminiscint of Jack Daniels and a surprisingly rich tort of chicken and waffles.

So basically I got up feeling like three more hours of sleep would be a kindness I should definitely meet upon myself and the time I took in the shower certainly proved that I was recalcitrant to get moving even though I was going to be late to the Obama '08 rally I was going to meet Zach and his friend Brooke at. After a weary drive through Beverly Hills and Bel Air I finally made it to Westwood and managed to find some overpriced parking to meet up with Zach at the UCLA plaza. Met him and Brooke who seemed a bit more cynical than I to be at a rally, which could begar the imagination if one were to not account for the fact that I was on good behavior, being bored in LA and all. I felt glad that Zach had made it to the front of a two block line and we bs'd a bit until we got in.

All in all it was some good shit. A stream of reps and congresswomen and a cute 93 year old korean lady gave us the pre-show foreplay and after much waiting we finally got the show on the road. First on the road was Caroline Kennedy, who was a bit rousing who then introduced Oprah who, with her very presence inspired a mass sonic ejaculation from the audience used her homey relatability and jedi mind tricks to make some fantastic points about the candidate. Her method is very effective and interesting. Listening to polished professionals of a specialized social sphere I'm fascinated by their ability to recognize the common and make it explicit in such a digestable fashion. Or rather I should it was primarily Oprah that wowed my ass. Off it seems trite to say that she pointed out how amazing it was when she said "When was the last time any of us went to a campaign rally?" Or that Obama is a "brilliant man" who comes along only "very rarely." But in groups that shit was gold. Oprah then went on to introduce Michelle Obama who came out with Stevie Wonder, incidentally the poor blind bastard fell at the first steps onto the catwalk (oddly not too many noticed this especially since he was being led by Michelle Obama) when he got up to the mic improv'd a simple ditty that has the catchy lyrics of "Barack Obama, Barack Obama." (Up scale and then down scale, clever I know)and then turned the shit over to Michelle who is certainly an Ivy league lawyer who graduated from Harvard Law, yes she is.

That aside she made good points: Barack is a child who is the product of a white mother in Kansas and Kenyan father. And was raised by his mother in Kansas in the 60's. Credit where it's due, being white raising a black kid the midwest 60's is certianly a difficulty setting of 10 on the parental scale. Point is he knows hardship and giving back to the community the real mindfuck came when Maria Schriver cam onto stage to endorse Obama, when all we mofo's know that her husband the governator is backing McCain. That was an actual surprise and frankly it was very cool to be the first to witness that piece of national news first.

A few sidenotes: The entire rally was aggresively working the woman vote the entire time. You'd suspect the we had only vajin on the premises. Obama is trying to grab that fine cluster of women voters so it's understandable, though everyone there was already voting for Obama so for those present with sense it was blatant and somewhat ridiculous.

They called us the real "Giants and Patriots" of today. Hehe, it was clever until they used it to death.

Afterwards we picked up some posters of Obama they were handing out for free and moved off to a place called Nature's Bounty which was a very decent vegan restaurant comparable to Saturn actually but less ambience, because, well less space. Then we moved onto Zack's place, watched Flight of the Conchords, played Mariokart and then I drove Brooke home and made it just in the nick of time to meet Donovan and Emily for an Upright Citizens Brigade show. It was quite nice and hosted by Jeff Garlin, who plays, surprise, Jeff on Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Turns out he's way cool and like to host a the show, charges only a dollar and just lets any ol comedian he likes come on the show and do a quick act and or dialogue. Truth is any interaction with him invovles a personal story that probably takes up a happy hour of the show and it was indeed good shit. There was a quite drunk girl who was turning both 21 and into an annoying drunk with perfect timing. By the end of the show she was displaying her ability to raise her legs above her head and say amazingly panderous and flirtatiously slutty things while on Jack Daniels.

She probably wouldn't have come off so bad if she hadn't plugged a show she was doing and handed her resume/headshot to Jeff. LA moments.

But it did make for comdey gold.

Afterwards we all went out for Roscoe's chicken and Waffles and Donovan taught Emily and I how to eat the meal properly, a trick he picked up from his friend Gavin. Lovely food. I wouldn't get between it and Oprah though. She'd get me before the heart attack from the stacks of butter.

Pretty badass day and it made me nto even think about missing KPP which is something I'm quite grateful for.
