DEARBORN HEIGHTS, Mich. -- A Dearborn Heights officer died overnight after he was shot in the line of duty.
Officer Jason Makowski was shot in the eye during a confrontation with a man in a neighborhood near Joy and Beech Daly roads Wednesday afternoon, Local 4 reported. He was assisting officers who responded to a 911 call about a man outside his house carrying a gun at about 6 p.m. in the 8500 block of Norborne Street, according to police.
Police said the man, Jeffrey Wolf, was battling depression and had been arguing with garbage workers.
Upon seeing police, the man became irate and began shooting at officers, police said.
Makowski was wounded in the shooting. He was transported to Garden City Hospital and then airlifted to the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor.
Makowski died at about 4:17 a.m. Thursday, police said.
Officers returned fire in the shooting and Wolf was killed, according to police.
Makowski was an 11-year veteran of the police force. The Dearborn Heights Police Department said their thoughts and prayers go out to Makowski and his loved ones.
