Storm Damage

May 02, 2011 22:47

This video has the best footage I have seen of the damage in my immediate area. This is why we are a level one federal disaster area. This is why I have described the situation here as "dire." This is why I am so annoyed that there has been NO national news coverage of the north Alabama tornadoes (only of Tuscaloosa, which was badly hit also, but we are hurting, too). This is why I am SO irritated that some foreign prince's wedding and some terrorist's assassination have monopolized the news.

At about 4:19 in there is footage of Magnolia Terrace. Magnolia Terrace is (was) a subdivision of two and three story brick McMansions immediately south of us. It is literally less than a thousand feet from my door.

The Browns Ferry and Lucas Ferry footage, of the power distribution towers, is why half a million people were without power for five days. I don't know how many are still without power; I haven't heard an updated report on that since this morning. Those are the transmission lines from the TVA nuclear plant at Brown's Ferry, that supplies two large cities here (Huntsville and Decatur) with their power.

Every morning, I wake up wanting to hug my house. I am so glad it is still here!
