Burly men in shorts

The rugby is making me sad. England v Ireland matches are tough for me, whatever the sport, because when Ireland are not playing England, they are my team. The Irish blood flowing through my veins makes me cheer and shout for them just as much as for England - except when they are playing England. Then I'm shouting and cheering for my England boys but I can't be despondent if they lose because it's Ireland and a win means points for them. If England don't win the Six Nations then I sure as hell want Ireland to win it.

England v Ireland has always been emotive in our household. My nan has lived in England for about 70 years and has never lost her Irishness, has never cheered for any other teams than Ireland and Spurs. My mum has the same tug-of-war as me - England and Ireland and a split personality when they play each other. My brother is marrying an Irishwoman. My nephew has only one rugby shirt - an Ireland one. There's only my dad who isn't polarised by the whole thing!

When they are playing each other, I want England to win but, either way, I want both teams to make a real match of it. Currently, England are lagging behind at Croke Park by far too much for my liking. Buck it up, boys!

End result:

Ireland 43 England 13

*facepalm*
