NBC is using "Let Me Entertain You" by Robbie Williams in commercials for their Gong Show revival, America's Got Talent. Cat Deeley is hosting So You Think You Can Dance on Fox. AT&T is using "All Around the World" by Oasis in their ads. We are therefore able to measure that it takes eight (8) years for entertainment to reach the United States from the U.K.

So far, this summer is all about
Bad Penny. It's the gift that keeps on giving. Even if you're not into fandom and are completely disinterested in Harry Potter, this is one enthralling and fucked up saga.
When I started reading, there was this shocking element of "OMG SUPERWANK RETURNS! The likes of which have not been seen since Crystal Gamgee!" I think it was the reaction many people had at first; the story seemed to gain popularity by riding a wave of schadenfreude throughtout all the internets. It was like a tsunami of splooge (a sploonami?). Spin-off wank begat wank begat wank, reproducing exponentially -- it's a bottomless pit of absolute madness.
One reason for the universal appeal is, as John Lennon sang, instant karma. If this was some sweetheart fangirl, say
cinnamonblood,
thehunter, or any number of my f'listers, no way would this have taken off the way it has. But Msscribe -- and I didn't know her personally, I'm making judgments solely based on the things she wrote and the way she interacted with people -- was a really foul individual. Her actions and the hurt she caused went beyond words like drama and wank, and her behavior shouldn't be minimized or excused. She didn't just create drama for herself; she used and vilified others in order to get sympathy and attention. She ruined reputations with her lies.
So yeah, it's a fascinating and entertaining read, and you'll lose hours to this thing. She's become this mythological figure now, a cautionary tale for n00bz to treat others the way you want to be treated. And there's criticism saying, well, that sort of notoriety is just what Msscribe wanted; however, current fandom sentiment is far from the sort of sympathetic attention she desired. Everyone just sees her as this sad, sick individual, and she's blacklisted from the fandom community into which she insinuated herself. If it's any consolation for those she hurt, 90% of her life seemed to be tied up in fandom, and she's had every shred of that life stripped from her.

I'm exhausted. I need an early (i.e., not midnight) bedtime.
I need to sleep straight through the morning -- bring on the weekend!
Edit: It's goddamn midnight. I hate sleep! Sleep is boring, and I'm not getting enough of it.
