The thing I find very telling here is that he said he was sorry that he hurt people and sorry that he caused pain, but he did not say that he was sorry for what he did or indicate that he feels in any way that it was wrong. It sounds like a CYA apology, the kind of apology celebrities give when they are hoping that people will just forget about what they said and move onto something else.
I'm not Jewish, but I am familiar with the concept of Purim (to celebrate Queen Esther and Mordecai's foiling of Haman's plans). People do dress up in costumes, but dressing up in costumes doesn't necessarily mean blackface. They wear masks and masquerade, but painting your face doesn't seem to be a significant part of the festivities.
He doesn't sound at all sorry or like he understands why what he did was fucked up. Seems more bitter that people are even upset with him about it in the first place.
I've been to a Purim party and is was a lot like Halloween with some kick ass hamantaschen. Not a bit of blackface in the place. He's just sorry he got caught.
And to show the crowd he runs with, he only got caught because his son posted a picture on FaceBook and someone saw it and leaked it to the press. Obviously this wasn't a problem to anyone in his social circle.
