solar eclipse :)

There is a solar eclipse today, it peaks at ~5:37pm in christchurch (65 percent coverage). The sun will be ~35 degrees above the horizon at that point. I've just tested some cellophane as an eclipse filter and it works quite well. I got dark purple :) The lighter colours will work too but you'll need more layers. One pack of purple partially unfolded gives enough of a filter to look at the full sun :)
I'll probably be looking at it from the roof of the physics building but there may be some telescopes projecting the sun at ground level somewhere, which will also be awesome :)
